‘The concern has been…’ – Elland Road icon makes brutally honest Dominic Calvert-Lewin admission

Leeds United have picked up just one point from their last three Premier League games. And this has made their relegation battle even more intense, with rivals picking up points over the past few weeks.

It seems like the Whites’ recent games have all followed a similar pattern – Leeds dominated the first half hour, but fail to score and then concede against the run of play, and blow the opportunity to get a result. That is what happened in the games against Manchester City and Sunderland; even though the Premier League admitted Leeds should have gotten a penalty against the Black Cats.

Former Leeds man makes honest Dominic Calvert-Lewin admission

The Leeds United attack have been guilty of not burying their chances when the team has momentum. Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all missed big chances in the last three games, which could have lead to precious points. This past weekend, Calvert-Lewin stepped up and missed a penalty just before half time against Crystal Palace – Leeds eventually played a 0-0 draw.

The striker has not been in great form; he is yet to score since February. Elland Road icon Gary McAllister believes that the former Everton man will be key during the run-in.

“I’ll put my hand up, I’m someone who really likes Dominic Calvert-Lewin,” McAllister said (quotes via YEP).

“Those couple of seasons he had at Everton, he was always in and around the England squad. He’s a proper handful leading the line and getting goals. He’s very good at linking play, running in behind. He’s an old-school centre-forward.

“The concern has always been his injury record. I think when you mention Calvert-Lewin, that’s the first thing people say. Good player, capable, but can he play three or four games consistently?”

Striker needs to show up in upcoming games

Goalscoring is a team effort, and Leeds scoring just one goal in their last four league games is a huge worry. But as the player that leads the attack, Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to ease the pressure of his teammates. Like in the Palace game, him scoring would have been a massive boost considering the momentum Leeds had. The striker needs to find his scoring boots at this point of the season, as every goal and every point counts towards survival.
