Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker blown away by Leeds United star: ‘He is brilliant’

Leeds Alan Shearer Gary Lineker

Leeds United delivered one of their most stubborn performances of the season, battling to a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa and stretching the gap to six points above the relegation zone.

Facing a Villa side with Champions League aspirations, the Whites showed determination and composure in equal measure. They matched the hosts for intensity, stayed compact at the back and handled the pressure with maturity. It was a well-earned point, significant not just for the breathing room it offers in the table, but for the confidence it continues to foster within the squad.

Anton Stach’s brilliantly taken free-kick midway through the first half gave Leeds the advantage at Villa Park, and for much of the contest it appeared that moment of quality might prove decisive. But Tammy Abraham’s late equaliser meant the points were ultimately shared.

Leeds again showed their grit and determination, and captain Ethan Ampadu was at the heart of another brilliant performance away from home.

Gary Linker and Alan Shearer gush about Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were discussing Leeds’ performance against Aston Villa in the Rest Is Football podcast, and they picked out Ampadu for praise.

Linker is happy to see Ampadu rekindling his career at Leeds and admitted that he was hearing good things about the midfielder when he was coming through at Chelsea.

Richards and Shearer also lavished praise on his quality on the ball and how good he has been at Leeds this season.

Linker said, “Everybody was talking about him, raving about him, weren’t they, and then he disappeared for a little bit in terms of his reputation.

“Then I saw one or two people saying ‘oh, I’m not sure about him,’ but I’ve been really impressed with him this season.”

“When he was coming through at Chelsea, he was a centre-half, he was a centre-half who was good on the ball, now he’s centre midfield, dictating play”, Richards pointed out.

“He was brilliant yesterday”, Shearer added.

Leeds need to finalise a new contract for Ampadu soon

Daniel Farke can hardly picture his Leeds side without Ampadu in it, and the Welshman has often been fast-tracked back into the team as soon as he’s declared fit.

He is effectively Farke’s voice and presence on the pitch, a leader who sets the tone, and arguably the most influential player in the squad. Yet despite that importance, he remains on a deal worth £40,000 per week and is not among the club’s top earners.

In fact, several of the newer arrivals are on higher wages, and Daniel James received a significant bump when he signed his new contract last year.

Ampadu may be content at Elland Road, but he is well aware of his value, and it doesn’t take much for doubts to creep in if a player feels underappreciated.

With several Premier League clubs likely willing to offer him a substantial pay rise, Leeds would be wise to move quickly and secure him on improved terms before any uncertainty begins to grow.
