Arsenal injury blow could force Daniel Farke into bold Leeds call

Daniel Farke could be handed an unexpected selection dilemma when Leeds United return to Premier League action against Arsenal on Saturday.

It has nothing to do with an injury in his own squad, either.

Arsenal are already dealing with their own fitness concerns ahead of Saturday’s meeting at the Emirates, with Kai Havertz now highly unlikely to feature after suffering a hamstring problem while on international duty with Germany.

That is likely to open the door for Viktor Gyokeres to make his first Premier League start for Arsenal this season.

While that is primarily Mikel Arteta’s problem, the change could affect how Farke approaches his own team selection.

Gyokeres could change Farke’s thinking

Havertz and Gyokeres are different types of forwards.

The Swede is a more imposing physical presence, capable of stretching a defence with his pace but also giving Arsenal a much stronger focal point when they go direct.

That could make Farke think twice about sticking with the same back three that saw Leeds draw goalless against Crystal Palace.

Nico Elvedi has done absolutely nothing wrong to warrant being dropped. The summer signing has been solid since joining and has given Farke another experienced option at the back.

But Jaka Bijol offers something slightly different.

The Slovenian has the Premier League experience, physicality and aggression that could be particularly useful against Gyokeres. His performances for Slovenia during the international break have only strengthened his case, too.

Bijol produced an impressive display in Slovenia’s win over North Macedonia, while Elvedi was also involved for Switzerland. The pair remain in competition for the third centre-back position alongside Tarik Muharemovic and James Justin.

It would be harsh on Elvedi

That is what makes Farke’s decision so difficult.

This would not be a case of Elvedi playing badly and losing his place. Quite the opposite. The Swiss has made a respectable start at Leeds, starting three of their first five league games.

Farke would simply be picking the defender he believes is better equipped for a particular opponent. With Rodon already sidelined for eight to 10 weeks, Leeds cannot afford to take unnecessary risks in central defence.

If Gyokeres leads Arsenal’s attack, the equation changes.

And that could be enough for Farke to turn back to Bijol, even if Elvedi has done nothing to deserve losing his place.
