£42.5m Leeds duo are becoming an embarrassment Daniel Farke cannot keep defending

Leeds United cannot keep making excuses for their lack of attacking quality. Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth was another frustrating afternoon for Daniel Farke, whose side managed just one shot on target and offered very little after falling behind.

The manager has repeatedly spoken about the positives in his team’s performances, but at some point potential and promising moments have to translate into something tangible. Leeds need players who can make the difference in the Premier League, not simply show flashes of what they might offer.

Two of Farke’s attacking options are increasingly struggling to justify Leeds’ investment. Their performances against Bournemouth only deepened those concerns.

James and Wilson are failing to deliver

Dan James and Harry Wilson represent a combined £42.5m commitment for Leeds. James cost £25m, while Wilson’s four-year contract is worth £17.5m. That is a sizeable investment in two players expected to provide goals, assists and attacking threat.

Yet neither has delivered consistently enough.

Farke was keen to defend them after the Bournemouth defeat, insisting that both had performed well in the first half.

“They both played a really good first half. It reminded me of Dan James’ really good pre-season form; I liked it. Harry, you could see he was coming into his rhythm a bit more”, he said.

He added: “Of course, with offensive players, they are just happy if they score a goal or assist. They would have deserved more out of their performance today. It’s not to be at the moment. But again, be stubborn and stay on it.”

That is generous, to put it mildly. Wilson has now gone seven Premier League appearances without a goal or assist for Leeds. Against Bournemouth, he managed two shots, neither on target, before being substituted in the 84th minute.

James was handed a rare league start but failed to make the most of it. He showed early energy and pace but offered little decisive contribution before being replaced after 65 minutes.

Farke cannot keep making the same excuses

There is a difference between recognising a player’s effort and pretending that it is enough. Leeds are struggling to create chances and score goals, and neither James nor Wilson is doing enough to ease that burden.

Wilson arrived from Fulham with a reputation as a proven Premier League contributor. James has experience of working under Farke and was an important figure in Leeds’ promotion campaign. Their previous achievements cannot keep buying them time.

Calvert-Lewin is being asked to carry far too much of the attacking responsibility, while Leeds lack reliable alternatives capable of changing games.

Farke can point to encouraging passages of play, but supporters will judge these players on what they produce in the final third. At a combined £42.5m, the expectations are perfectly reasonable.

Leeds need goals and creativity, not another explanation for why two expensive attacking options have failed to deliver. The manager’s patience is understandable, but it cannot be unlimited.
