Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann sparked conversations this week about his decisions ahead of the World Cup. The former Bayern boss expressed his views on how many players fit in his plans.
Unfortunately for Leeds star Anton Stach, Nagelsmann had criticism for the midfielder. He spoke in depth about Stach’s abilities, but concluded that the 27-year old can only play in defence. It came as a surprise for many fans and pundits covering German football as the midfielder has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season. He reportedly was on the fringes of a national team call up, but after these comments, it looks very unlikely.
Leeds United boss hits back at Julian Nagelsmann
Leeds boss Daniel Farke addressed Anton Stach and his abilities, with his description of the midfielder completely contradicting what Julian Nagelsmann said.
”Anton is highly praised as one of the best signings in the whole Premier League and rightly so. He shows versatility, plays in every midfield role and delivers with big consistency.”
| Competition | Games | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier League | 23 | 4 | 3 |
| FA Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| EFL Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| TOTAL | 25 | 4 | 3 |
”Big for us with his strength in the air, wins many balls, really strong in the duel. I also like his ability to run the game, he’s good with the game in front of him but also with his back to goal he can influence the game.”
”He delivers goals and assists, often the creative spark for us, covered ground is always on the top level, also a high speed distance. For me a very complete player and we’re all happy to have him.”

Anton Stach deserves to be in World Cup conversations
Julian Nagelsmann is Germany boss and he is paid to make big decisions and to have his own opinions. But Daniel Farke is completely right about Anton Stach; the midfielder has been outstanding this season and deserves a shot at making the World Cup squad. He had a reputation for being just a ”ball winner” when he was in the Bundesliga, but since he arrived in England he has been used in a completely different role. Stach uses more of the ball now and creates chances in attack while covering the pitch defensively; he has been a huge part of the Whites’s success and hopefully he is rewarded with a place in the Germany squad for the World Cup.
