Daniel Farke “ready to sacrifice” Leeds United fan favourite this summer

Daniel Farke has had a habit of isolating Leeds United players when the latter part of the season begins. Last year, Mateo Joseph was dropped from January in the  run in.

Leeds eventually lifted the Championship on the final day and were promoted, but it was a strange decision at the time. Farke also decided to rely on a smaller core of players in the final games of the season. And it looks like the same has happened in this campaign, with some first team stars being limited to appearances in the club’s FA Cup run.

Joel Piroe, Ao Tanaka, Lucas Perri and Sebastiaan Bornauw are among the players who have barely gotten any minutes in the first team since the turn of the year.

Leeds United star could be set for exit this summer

One big surprise this season has been how little Wilfried Gnonto has been used. The winger was the spark plug off the bench last year, closing out games for Daniel Farke. But this season, he has barely played when fit and available. Gnonto has been linked with a summer exit, with SportsBoom reporting that a number of Serie A clubs are interested.

Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Roma and Juventus are all keeping an eye on the 22-year old’s status. Gnonto has been linked with a return to Italy over the last few years, but has opted to stay at Elland Road. But because of the lack of minutes this season, he could be forced to rethink his future under Daniel Farke.

Daniel Farke has not been fair to Wilfried Gnonto

Wilfried Gnonto is still under contract for a few more seasons, so it is not definite that he will leave the club. However, Leeds United will face a tough task trying to convince the winger that he has a future at Elland Road.

Wilfried Gnonto – 2025/26 Season Stats ⚽
Leeds United | Games, Minutes played, Goals
Competition Games Played Minutes Played Goals + Assists
Premier League 16 391 1
FA Cup 4 295 1
EFL Cup 1 32 1
Total 21 718 3

And if he does leave, a lot of the blame will fall on Daniel Farke. The Leeds boss has consistently overlooked the winger this season; even when he is fit, he has preferred the likes of Brenden Aaronson and Dan James. Aaronson and James have not been impressive whatsoever and have not contributed more than Gnonto has done even in his limited appearances. The 49ers have a massive decision to make at the end of the season.
