Leeds United fans thought the goalkeeping situation was resolved in the summer transfer window. The Whites went out to sign Brazilian keeper Lucas Perri from Lyon.
All this came about because Daniel Farke got frustrated with Illan Meslier’s errors in the promotion run-in. After defending the French keeper during the campaign, the Leeds boss decided to take action before he cost the team a promotion place. Karl Darlow stepped in goal for the remaining matches and Leeds won the league title.
Perri’s arrival was a sign that the club really needed a solution for their problems in goal. But from his first few games in the team, it was quite obvious that he had some deficiencies. Despite being in goals and keeping clean sheets, some noted that his distribution was far from the best.
Daniel Farke makes Lucas Perri decision
And as the season has progressed, somehow the Brazilian’s shot stopping has fallen off a cliff. Perri has gone from saving Leeds in games, and rescuing points to giving them away. Daniel Farke called out the 28-year old multiple times especially as he was responsible for goals in the Manchester United and Newcastle games. Last week, Farke decided to go with Karl Darlow as Leeds beat Fulham and kept a clean sheet. When asked about the goalkeeping situation in Thursday’s press conference, the Leeds boss had this to say:
”Darlow returned with a clean sheet, and it’s always a top-class performance. You have organised your defence, maybe, but you can’t ask for more.
”Very happy for this after being out for a while. No need to speak about a change.
”For Lucas, there is the chance for a reset in training. Always a chance for a road back. Skilful goalkeeper, up to him – next chance that comes along, he grabs it.
Leeds need to resolve this issue permanently
Bringing in Darlow was a step to solve the problem, but the big question will be if that is the permanent solution. Will the Welsh keeper be in goal for the rest of the season, or will the two shot stoppers be picked based on their performances in training.
Farke needs to be ruthless like he was with Illan Meslier in the Championship, because if he does not resolve this situation in the coming weeks, it might cost the club their survival this season.
