Saturday saw Leeds United take on Manchester City at Elland Road. It was a big game between to sides that had a lot at stake in the Premier League.
The Whites were fighting to get points on the board in their pursuit of safety, while City were in hot pursuit of Arsenal in the title race. The match started like many other games at Elland Road, with Leeds having a great start.
Daniel Farke’s side were able to swarm Manchester City for most of the first half, but they failed to convert their chances when they had the opportunity. Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal of the game just before the first half, with Pep Guardiola’s side holding onto the lead for the rest of the game and securing a huge win.
Emmanuel Petit had words for Leeds United fans after Saturday’s incident
The match was great, but the major talking points occured off the field – with Daniel Farke’s sending off being one. During the game, fans also resorted to jeers, boos and chants when there was a break in play for some players to break their Ramadan fast. Emmanuel Petit has now spoken on the issue, condemning what the home fans did:
“I don’t like it, in fact I hate it (Leeds fan booing). First of all, it’s the protocol (to pause the game for Ramadan), more importantly, it’s the political environment we’re living in, and I totally agree with what Pep Guardiola said. Racism is coming from everywhere now, and I’m quite scared about what will happen in the future…This is not the kind of message that is very helpful for this world… What happened at Leeds is terrible, and I’m pretty sure it’s not the reflection of what the vast majority of Leeds fans think.”

Scenes have taken attention away from the game
In a match that was supposed to be a showcase of Leeds United and how good of a side they are in a Premier League, the wrong news dominated the headlines. Nobody has really touched on the fact about how Pep Guardiola’s side really struggled and could have lost the game on another day. Now the major talking points are about the crowd and their behaviour. Fans will hope this goes away, but for now it remains a stain on what has been a very good season.
