Leeds United head north tonight to take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, carrying the momentum of a seven-game unbeaten run.
Daniel Farke’s men delivered another assured performance at the weekend, securing a 1–1 draw against Manchester United at Elland Road. The result leaves Leeds 16th in the standings and further strengthens their buffer above the relegation places.
That cushion has grown following West Ham’s latest defeat at home against Nottingham Forest, with the Whites now eight points clear of the bottom three and increasingly well positioned in their fight for Premier League survival.
Leeds have shared the points in their last three away matches against Brentford, Sunderland and Liverpool, and will look to show similar resilience when they face Newcastle on Tyneside.
Paul Merson makes a surprise Newcastle vs Leeds prediction
The former Arsenal star pointed out that Leeds are playing well and have been picking up points against some of the toughest opponents in the Premier League.
He was not too impressed with what he saw from Newcastle in their win over Crystal Palace recently, and is expecting a tough game tonight in the north east.
Merson is backing Leeds to walk away with another point on the road from an entertaining game against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
He told Sportskeeda: “Leeds are doing really well. They’re nicking points in difficult games when West Ham are failing to win easier matches. It’s a huge boost to Leeds’ aspirations of avoiding relegation.
“Newcastle weren’t great the other day. Even though they won 2-0 against Crystal Palace, I wasn’t really impressed by the performance. I was surprised that Nick Woltemade did not come off the bench quicker in that game. Newcastle were up against a back three, and he would have been useful from the start.
“Considering the way both teams are playing, I wouldn’t be surprised if Leeds got something out of this game. I’m going for an entertaining draw here.”
A draw at Newcastle will be an excellent result
In the context of the last few games, a draw at Newcastle will not be a surprising result for Leeds as they have been playing well away from home in recent weeks.
However, it will still be an astonishing result as it will stretch Leeds’ unbeaten run to eight games, something that felt like a dream even a few weeks back.
| Opponent | Venue | Score | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester United | Home | 1–1 | D |
| Liverpool | Away | 0–0 | D |
| Sunderland | Away | 1–1 | D |
| Crystal Palace | Home | 4–1 | W |
| Brentford | Away | 1–1 | D |
| Liverpool | Home | 3–3 | D |
| Chelsea | Home | 3–1 | W |
It is a testament to how well Leeds and Farke have done in recent games that no one would be surprised if they walk away with a point from Newcastle.
However, it will be a stunning result as for a promoted team to not lose an away game after trips to Brentford, Sunderland, Liverpool and Newcastle would be nothing short of brilliant.
