Leeds United square off against Norwich City at Elland Road on Sunday, with the game taking place during the month of Ramadan.

Leeds were at the centre of a controversy during the Manchester City game, as sections of the Elland Road crowd were heard booing as play was stopped to allow those observing Ramadan to break their fast.

These Leeds fans were slammed by the likes of Emmanuel Petit for their conduct during the break in the play, as well as by other members of the media.

However, ahead of the game against Norwich, Leeds have issued an official statement regarding the next break in play they are scheduled to have for Ramadan.

Leeds fans urged to respect break in play during Norwich clash

In a post on Leeds United’s official website, the club are asking supporters to show respect when play is halted to allow those observing Ramadan to break their fast during the game, including Joel Piroe.

Play is expected to be halted around the 75th minute to coincide with the sun setting to allow players to take on fluids and energy supplements.

Leeds also condemned those who boo those players observing Ramadan, whilst also acknowledging that their messaging could have been better prior to the Man City game to inform those in attendance who were confused when there was a break in play.

Hopefully, with better messaging in place, Elland Road will be completley respectful of the break in play that is scheduled to occur against Norwich.

Opportunity for Joel Piroe to impress against Norwich

Piroe has found gametime hard to come by this season, with the forward being limited to just two starts in the Premier League so far, with Piroe failing to score or assist in 277 total minutes.

The 26-year-old could be in line to be handed a rare start against Norwich, giving Piroe an opportunity to prove to Farke why he should not be used as sparingly as he has been.

Against Sunderland, Piroe was subbed on again, but struggled to influence the game in the 19 minutes he was given.

  • Piroe had two shots against Sunderland, with one of them being blocked
  • The forward lost possession five times whilst he was on the pitch
  • Unsurprisingly, Piroe also lost the only aerial duel he was involved in (Sofascore)

If Piroe was able to score against Norwich and get some much-needed confidence back, then perhaps Farke would have a valuable commodity on his bench that would be capable of turning games in United’s favour during the run-in.
