Leeds United look set to lose one of their players on a free transfer this summer.
Many members of Daniel Farke’s squad have an uncertain future in West Yorkshire when the current Premier League campaign ends.
Pascal Struijk is an example of a player who could leave if United are relegated from the top flight, but if they manage to stay up, there looks to be a good chance that he could put pen to paper on a new deal at Elland Road.
However, regardless of what division Leeds find themselves in next season, one player, who was initially signed for £11million back in January 2023, looks as though they will walk out the door for nothing following the expiration of their contract.
Max Wober to leave on a free at the end of next season
Wober, 28, is currently on his second loan spell away from Elland Road, this time at Werder Bremen, after his initial loan spell in the summer of 2023 saw him join Borussia Moenchengladbach for the season.
However, Wober’s campaign at Werder Bremen has been far from ideal, with the defender making just one appearance for the club this season back in August before injuries derailed his season.
According to a recent report from SportsBoom, Werder Bremen have now decided to opt against triggering their buy option for Wober, with the defender set to return to West Yorkshire with just a year remaining on his current deal with Leeds.
With Wober failing to put himself in the shop window as Leeds had hoped, the most likely scenario for the Austrian international is that he leaves on loan again next season, with the hopes of impressing to find a new club when he becomes a free agent.

Data suggests Max Wober has no future at Leeds
In between Wober’s two loan spells away from Leeds, there was a season where he was reintegrated into the squad by Farke, during United’s Championship title-winning campaign.
But gametime for the defender was limited, suggesting Farke was not convinced by Wober enough to keep him as part of the Leeds squad upon their return to the Premier League.
- In the Championship last season, Wober was limited to just eight appearances
- Out of these eight appearances, only two were starts
- Wober played a total of just 349 league minutes for Leeds last season (Sofascore)
Whilst the 49ers should do everything in their power to get a fee for Wober in the summer, this will understandably be hard after his injury-ravaged season.
However, if they have to loan Wober away again in the summer before he ultimately leaves Elland Road as a free agent, so be it; at least the defender’s wages wouldn’t be on the books before the Whites can finally move on from having to reevaluate Wober’s future every summer.
