Days after Leeds United facing Manchester City, the game is still making the headlines – mostly for the wrong reasons. The match was a great clash between two very good sides.
And the football played matched the anticipation for the game. Leeds fans will be disappointed that their team were not able to get something from the game despite being the more dominant side. Pep Guardiola’s men were able to get the victory via a late goal in the first half.
But the other incidents from the game were what dominated the news. From Daniel Farke getting sent off after the final whistle, and the handball incident involving Matheus Nunes.
Daniel Farke defends Leeds United fans after Ramadan booing incident
During the game, there was a break in play as some players from Manchester City broke their Ramadan fast. There were boos and chants from the crowd throughout the break, prompting discussions over the weekend. Daniel Farke spoke about this in Monday’s press conference, saying that the fans were not aware and thought the break in play was for something else.
”To be honest if it was really disrespectful in these terms, because of the break, we all have to learn out of this.”
”But during the game this was not my feeling, I think it was just a surprise for everyone there was this little break, I’m not sure if everyone was aware.
”We had the last game against Man City when Pep got the players together, we had such a good start and our supporters maybe had the feeling they were doing the same thing again. I don’t think it had anything to do with the break for Ramadan, I don’t think anyone was aware.
”If it was from some people being disrespectful then it’s not acceptable and you have to learn, there’s no doubt about this.
”We as a club and group, there is no better place than living with a different passport of different religions. My gut feeling is supporters didn’t really know what was happening.”
Leeds boss is right to defend his fanbase
Daniel Farke is within his rights to defend the Leeds fanbase; as a coach he is responsible for his players and to an extent, the fans. How many coaches in the league would throw their fanbase under the bus. And the points he did make were clear; in the reverse fixture City faked an injury to get a ‘tactical’ break, so fans reacting this time around is justified. It is just unfortunate that the whole situation has dominated the headlines.
