Kalvin Phillips arrived at Sheffield United on loan from Manchester City, hoping to reignite his career. Instead, his big moment quickly turned into a nightmare during the Steel City derby last month.
The former Leeds United midfielder had only just started settling in after completing a deadline-day move, with City even agreeing to pay a significant portion of his wages to help push the deal through.
Chris Wilder was understandably delighted to bring him in. Phillips arrived with promotion experience and the pedigree of an England international who had played in a major final, exactly the kind of influence the Blades were hoping would strengthen their squad. But any optimism quickly faded in the intense atmosphere of the derby clash with Sheffield Wednesday.
Early in the second half, Phillips dived into a reckless challenge and was shown a straight red card. He has not played since then, and Wilder has made more revelations about his potential return date.
Wilder makes an astonishing claim about Kalvin Phillips
The Sheffield United boss has claimed that the midfielder has undergone a minor knee operation to clear up a problem and will not return before the international break.
Wilder stressed that the club are not paying him the full wages during his recovery period, and he did clear a medical when he joined Sheffield United in January.
He is hopeful that Phillips will be seen in a Sheffield United jersey again before the end of the season.
Wilder said on SUTV: “He’s had a really minor knee clean-up operation, so we’re looking for him to be back after the international break. It was a really innocuous challenge [vs Sheffield Wednesday].
“Just to let people know, we’re not paying full wage during his recovery. It’s a deal that Steven Bettis did, which is brilliant for the football club and covers us in so many aspects.
“Also, he passed a medical as well, so we’re not signing a player that’s injured before all that comes out.
“He’s an outstanding character and player, unfortunately, he’s not going to be right until after the international break, but hopefully we’ll see him before the end of the season in a Sheffield United shirt.”
He is running out of time to save his career
