‘One of the best’ – Callum Wilson describes what its like to play at Elland Road following Leeds vs Newcastle clash

Speaking to fellow Premier League striker Michail Antonio on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, Newcastle’s Callum Wilson has given his opinion on the famous Elland Road atmosphere.

Wilson’s comments came after the Whites secured a 2-2 draw against the Magpies last Saturday in what was a battling display from both sides.

The stadium atmosphere – already raucous at kick-off – was ramped up a notch when Luke Ayling put Leeds ahead after latching on to a Nick Pope parry in the 7th minute.

A missed penalty from the Whites later in the first half was punished just moments after when they conceded a penalty of their own, handing Wilson the perfect opportunity to equalise from the spot. Unlike his counterpart Patrick Bamford minutes before – he took it.

Wilson netted from another penalty midway through the second half before Leeds’ Kristensen levelled the scoring with a rare goal.

The mood around Elland Road remained heated and ferocious throughout, something noted by Wilson and described to Antonio – whose own West Ham side is set to host the Whites on Sunday.

“You guys at home or away? Because their stadium and atmosphere was one of the best I have played this season.

“For a team that’s down there in the relegation zone. You don’t expect atmospheres to be like that.

“But it was loud before the game. They scored and the roof lifted off.”

The Leeds players will have to do without home advantage against the Hammers, but will hope that the support generated by their dedicated away following will help them get over the line to secure a vital three points.
