Leeds United suffered yet another defeat this weekend at the hands of Manchester City. Daniel Farke’s season continues to go from bad to worse following this poor run of form.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Whites had already entered the relegation zone after their loss to Aston Villa. According to reports, Farke’s fate could be decided after this stretch of games, meaning every point is crucial.
Leeds will be very frustrated they could not get anything from the game as they mounted a huge comeback in the second half. Phil Foden gave Manchester City the lead in the first five minutes, with Josko Gvardiol doubling the score before half time. Daniel Farke’s men came flying out of the blocks in the second half, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulling one back.
The striker caused Gvardiol to bring him down in the box, winning a penalty that Lukas Nmecha dispatched to make it 2-2. Unfortunately for the travelling support, Leeds just could not hold on for 90 minutes. Foden eventually scored the late winner to hand his side all three points.
Daniel Farke furious at Manchester City tactics in Leeds United game
Farke’s side mounted a lot of pressure early in the second period, and they could have easily turned the game on its head. But around the 59th minute, City keeper Donnarumma went down for a while and in that time, Pep Guardiola gathered his players on the sideline for a mini team talk. After the game, the Leeds boss was furious about what transpired: “Everyone knows why he went down. It’s the elephant in the room. It was obvious. You can speak about it.”
“Within rules. Asked fourth official, ‘Do you want to do something?’ ‘Our hands are tied, can’t do anything’.
“If we don’t educate players in football, what to do in fair play, bend rules to your advantage, fake injury for team talk, it’s nothing I like.”
After that pause in play, City came back in the game and eventually won the game late in the match.
Leeds boss has every right to complain
Daniel Farke has every right to be furious with what Manchester City did, it completely affect the momentum of Leeds United. And with how the flow of the game was going, the away side were firmly in the game. Leeds played so well in the second half, and would have gotten a result on any other day. Hopefully this is something the Whites can build on as they continue to face difficult opponents in this stretch of games.
