It was not a great day for Leeds United at Wembley as they lost to Chelsea. An almost perfect week for the Whites has ended in disappointment.
There was a lot of confidence in the build up to the game, and Leeds got off to a fast start. They managed to put Chelsea on the backfoot for the first few minutes of the game. But the Blues then responded, by getting a foothold early in the second half. The match was tightly contested, with both sides eager to press high up the pitch. Unfortunately, Leeds were caught out when pressing which lead to Enzo Fernandez getting a free header in the box. That was the only goal of the game as Daniel Farke’s side failed to score in the second half.
Daniel Farke makes shocking admission after FA Cup defeat
After the game, Daniel Farke admitted that Leeds could have done much better in the game on Sunday. Chelsea were not the better side and only managed to convert their opportunity when they got the chance.
“It was a tight game. They were able to find the back of the net. I think we nearly dominated at least one statistic more shots on target, more expected goals, more big chances missed. But it’s also fair to say that the football in the first half we didn’t have our best days. You could feel the boys were a bit too nervous today to be at their free-flowing best and for that we had a few unnecessary loss of the balls and assisted more or less to their two or three chances in the first half.”
The Leeds United boss continued, saying that he did not believe that Chelsea outplayed his team at Wembley.
“We were not played out of the park even though it wasn’t our best game in the first half. Credit to my players. We went for it and pressed higher and dominated more. Of course, you always have to be switched on for counter attacks. But the goalkeeper was able to get two great saves. And the defensive flow of Chelsea was there, it was top defensive behavior. They always had an answer to all our questions that we asked. It’s hard to take anyhow, but nevertheless, I’m proud of the cup run.”

Leeds could have done better
In a game like this, you have to punish your opponent and Leeds failed to do just that. Brenden Aaronson had a big chance in the opening half, but fluffed his lines. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a fantastic header saved also. Leeds threatened to score multiple times as the game went on, but all Chelsea did was to sit back and absorb pressure. They had the composure to see out the game in the final minutes, and got the win.
