Leeds United managed a crucial result against Crystal Palace on Sunday. But the Whites are still not out of trouble yet in the Premier League.
At Selhurst Park, Daniel Farke’s side once again showed that they are capable of competing with top teams in the league. They dominated the first half but failed to capitalize on the momentum. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the chance to give the away side the league just before half time, but he put his effort wide. And to make things worse, just minutes later, Leeds went down to 10 men when Gabriel Gudmundsson was shown a second yellow for fouling Ismaila Sarr on a counter attack.
The Whites played a man down for the whole of the second period and managed to hold off Oliver Glasner’s side for a precious point.
Premier League confirm VAR error in Leeds United game
Daniel Farke and the fans will be furious with the fact that they did not pick up three points, but this is only because of what happened in the previous two games. Leeds United faced Manchester City and Sunderland in consecutive games and failed to win either of them. They lost both games by one goal. A new Premier League panel review has confirmed that Leeds were robbed of a decision against Sunderland. The Premier League Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel has revealed that the Whites should have gotten a penalty in the game against Sunderland.
Per the BBC, the panel noted that Luke O’Nien should have been penalized for holding Pascal Struijk: “[Lukes O’Nien was] not looking at the ball, places his arms around the neck of [Pascal] Struijk in a clear non-footballing action and stops the Leeds United attacker from progressing towards goal.”
Decision has cost Leeds in relegation battle
Refereeing in the Premier League has been criticized a lot this season, and Leeds United have been on the receiving end of some ridiculous decision. Just in the Crystal Palace game, they were unfairly refereed as the home side kept on getting ”cheap” fouls during the game. There was also so much controversy when Manchester City visited Elland Road a few weeks ago. These mistakes are easy to review and declare as an error post-match, but in real time it has cost many teams crucial points at this part of the season.
