Former Leeds United star opens up about emotional Elland Road exit – Leeds fans won’t buy it

Crysencio Summerville sheds light on Leeds United exit.

The summer of 2023 was not a great one for Leeds United; the Whites were relegated from the Premier League. That season was full of a series of crazy events from start to finish.

The club changed coaches three times in one campaign and still managed to go down to the Championship. Daniel Farke was brought in to guide the Whites back up to the top flight. And he almost achieved this in one season, guiding the team to the play-off finals. Unfortunately, Leeds lost to Southampton and had to wait another season before gaining automatic promotion.

What was even worse that summer was that the club was forced to part with their best players – Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter.

So Daniel Farke had to compete in the 2024/25 season with a ”weaker” Leeds team, but still managed to pull it off. Crysencio Summerville has now reflected on the summer of 2024 including the play-off final and signing for West Ham:

“I felt like Leeds is my home. I had a plan there as well.” he said in an interview with the BBC.

“Like I put on my board what my plans were and one of them was bringing Leeds back to the Premier League.

“My mind was only on that. It was very good with many goals, many assists. Only what I still feel in my heart, a heartbreak, we lost the final against Southampton.

“Obviously the season after they managed to come back to the Premier League so I’m still happy for the players who stayed and who are there now.”

Leeds fans will not care about his words

Over a year has passed and Leeds are finally back in the Premier League. Upon hearing Summerville’s words, some finds will not find these comments truthful. While the club did have to sell for PSR reasons, the winger could have stayed. Stars like Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon were with the team in their promotion campaign, when they were highly rated and had some suitors.

If Summerville was really a man of his words, he would have delayed a move and stayed on for another season and then left after achieving his goal. Leeds fans are still hurt from that summer, but what their former player gave to them that season is enough for them to ignore some words in this interview.
