Almost as soon as the season concluded, rumours began flying around that Liverpool were eyeing up Leeds United’s Raphinha.
The Brazilian impressed at Elland Road last season scoring six times and notching nine assists as his performances on the right wing began reminiscent of what Mo Salah does for Liverpool. The natural comparison between the two as well as Raphinha’s Brazilian connection with fellow Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has led many Leeds United fans to sweat over the likelihood of this deal. Liverpool certainly look as though they need reinforcements up front with Divock Origi not cutting the mustard and with Sadio Mane and Salah headed to the African Cup of Nations over the winter.
Reports circulated at the beginning of the month that Liverpool were in contact with Leeds over a potential move however the former Premier League Champions didn’t offer enough. However, a deal hasn’t been ruled out as of yet and interest remains from Merseyside.
However, former Liverpool man Paul Stewart has suggested that it would be a waste of money from Liverpool’s perspective owing to the fact Raphinha is “not Liverpool standard.”
In an interview with TT, the ex-Red suggested Liverpool should be looking for someone on par with their current front three or potentially even better as they look to wrestle the title away Manchester City. He said: “I think he’s a great player, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think you’re getting anything better in terms of Mane, Firmino and Salah.”
Such an assessment appears a little harsh. The 24-year-old has already displayed great quality and many believe he’s only going to get better. However, Leeds fans will be hoping Jurgen Klopp listens to Stewart’s views and avoids making a play for the winger this summer.
