Harry Maguire takes swipe at Leeds with ‘comfortable’ Man Utd verdict

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire hasn’t stopped himself from painting a rosy picture of how comfortable his team were in their 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.

Leeds and Manchester United played out a tough 1-1 draw at Elland Road as the away side’s run without a Premier League win extended to five games.

The Whites were favourites to win after a week of Manchester United being on and off the pitch. However, the Red Devils dug deep to earn a point at Elland Road.

Harry Maguire saw a completely different match to what everyone else experienced and insisted his side could have won at the end.

The Manchester United defender’s delusional post-match comments

The Manchester United defender praised his teammates’ effort and the togetherness they showed at tough away grounds like Elland Road.

He is disappointed that Manchester United allowed Leeds to score from a set-piece in a game he feels his team were largely comfortable.

The defender also believes Manchester United could have won, as they looked like the likely team to break the deadlock.

Maguire said on Sky Sports: “You can’t question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight. This is a tough place to come. Leeds have been flying in the league.

“When you come to places like this, you can’t be beaten on set pieces, and we conceded one that got them back in the game.

“Throughout the match, we felt comfortable in our shape, and they didn’t really create many chances.

“Conceding a set-piece after half-time was disappointing; it changed the whole game, and we had to dig in.

“We got a foothold at about 70 minutes and probably looked the more likely team to go and win it, but a draw is probably fair.”

His comments do not stand up to any scrutiny

Harry Maguire’s assessment that Manchester United were comfortable against Leeds United does not quite stand up to scrutiny. If anything, the visitors looked anything but settled once Leeds found their way back into the game at Elland Road.

Leeds made life difficult with their intensity and willingness to compete for every ball, while the equaliser exposed Manchester United’s set-piece vulnerability. A team genuinely in control does not suddenly find itself under that kind of pressure because of one lapse in concentration.

Manchester United may have enjoyed brief spells of possession, particularly later in the second half, but that hardly means they dictated the game. Leeds disrupted their rhythm, forced them to work hard and made the contest far more uncomfortable than Maguire suggested.

A draw might have been fair, but comfort? Hardly.
