Leeds United’s fierce rivalry with Manchester United has resurfaced in an unexpected row, with a former Elland Road player becoming the subject of a furious rant from one of Old Trafford’s most famous former stars.
The debate centred on who makes the big decisions at Manchester United, with questions raised about their experience and whether they are the right people to help the club move forward. But when the conversation turned to one name in particular, the reaction was unmistakable.
For Leeds supporters, the exchange will be especially interesting given the clubs’ history and the role their former player now holds at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel questions Wilcox’s role at Man Utd

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Peter Schmeichel criticised Manchester United for putting inexperienced people in key decision-making roles.
“We have people who openly, during their playing careers, stated that they hated Manchester United and played for clubs that were enemies of Manchester United.
“With very little experience, all of a sudden they are in decision-making jobs at Manchester United.”
Presenter Kelly Cates then asked whether he meant Jason Wilcox. Schmeichel confirmed that he was.
“He is one of them.
“I just don’t understand why he is there. When he played for Leeds, he was supposed to hate Man United, and he hated Man United.
“At Blackburn, when he was there, they won the league and beat us to it on the last day.”
Wilcox represented Leeds and Blackburn Rovers, who famously finished ahead of Manchester United to win the Premier League title in 1994-95. Schmeichel clearly has not forgotten that history.

Leeds connection adds fuel to the debate

Schmeichel’s comments put Wilcox’s time at Elland Road firmly back in the spotlight. The former Leeds player is now Manchester United’s director of football, a position that gives him significant influence over the club’s sporting decisions.
For Schmeichel, that past is difficult to overlook. However, his criticism wasn’t limited to Wilcox’s former clubs; he also questioned the experience of those now making decisions at Old Trafford.
There is an obvious counterargument. Playing for a rival does not automatically make someone unsuitable for a senior role elsewhere, and professional football is full of people who move between clubs with fierce rivalries. What matters is whether they can do the job effectively.
However, Wilcox is under fire with the club on the brink of changing managers mid-season for the third year running.
But Schmeichel’s reaction shows how much Leeds and Manchester United’s history still matters. Wilcox’s playing days at Elland Road may be long behind him, yet that connection was enough to prompt one of Old Trafford’s most recognisable former players to question his appointment.
Leeds fans won’t miss the irony: a former Whites player now sits at the centre of a debate over Manchester United’s future.
