Leeds United visited Crystal Palace on Sunday in search of a result that would take them far away from danger. The Whites have spent the past few weeks looking over their shoulder near the bottom of the table.
The pressure has been growing worse ever since Leeds failed to take a point in their last two games against Sunderland and Manchester City. The game at Selhurst Park on Sunday was a very interesting one. Leeds came out of the gates flying against Crystal Palace, and should have managed to get at least a goal in the first half.
| Stat | Crystal Palace | Leeds United |
|---|---|---|
| Possession | 67% | 33% |
| Big Chances | 0 | 1 |
| Shots | 12 | 10 |
| Expected Goals (xG) | 0.67 | 1.12 |
The hosts were stunned after the early intensity, and could not keep Daniel Farke’s side quiet. Leeds managed more shots and tested the keeper more in the first period but could not find a way to go until they were given a penalty. Unfortunately for the away side, Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the spot kick and the game eventually ended in a draw after 90 minutes of football.
Leeds United legends blast Crystal Palace star after antics on Sunday
Minutes after the missed penalty in the first half, another controversy came about. Crystal Palace looked to have a promising attacking opportunity, but Gabriel Gudmundsson was deemed to have fouled Ismaila Sarr and was handed a second yellow card and his marching orders. After Gudmundsson was booked, Palace defender Jaydee Canvot could be seen celebrating the sending off right in front of the Leeds players and the referee.
Leeds duo Simon Grayson and Dom Matteo did not take too kindly to the young defenders antics.
“I will speak on behalf of both of us, if I’d seen this and I was playing back in our day, I’d be laying one on him, I’d be making sure that you are a target and I’m going to do something about that because it’s disrespectful, celebrating like he’s won the FA Cup, got the three points.” Grayson said.
Dom Matteo added: “For me, it’s embarrassing. If one of my players did that, I’d be absolutely fuming. That’s not right, you can’t do something like that.”
Embarrassing reaction from Jaydee Canvot
Nobody knows what sparked the reaction from Canvot or why he celebrated the decision so wildly, but the incident was very unsportsmanlike. It was a surprise that the referee did not at least reprimand him for his behaviour in that moment. Fortunately for him, the Leeds players were more preoccupied with one of their teammates being sent off, and it could have gone ugly if they decided to react. Farke’s men did manage to get the last laugh, denying Palace a home win against a team down to 10-men.
I think I know why that plonker Jaydee Canvot celebrated so unsportsmanlike. That’s because he knew his players couldn’t handled Gudmundsson forages upfront. Gudmundsson was just simply too good for them. So, it was like striking lottery to see Gudmundsson getting the red card.
