Leeds United were forced to rely on penalties to overcome Championship outfit Birmingham City in the fourth round of the FA Cup and book their place in the next stage.
Sean Longstaff converted the decisive spot-kick in the shootout to send Leeds through, with Birmingham pushing the Whites all the way in a fiercely contested tie.
Often criticised in recent weeks, Lucas Perri proved the match-winner, producing several key saves during the game and again in the shootout to prevent an upset at St Andrew’s.
However, Robbie Savage has made a big prediction for Leeds in the FA Cup as he feels they have it in them to go all the way and win the tournament.
Robbie Savage tips Leeds United to win the FA Cup
The former midfielder insisted that Leeds’ focus must remain on ensuring survival in the Premier League, and they are not safe yet.
However, he believes that if Leeds can secure safety soon and play their strongest team in the FA Cup, they have a chance of doing more than well in the FA Cup.
He feels they have a decent chance of a deep cup run and going all the way to Wembley this season.
Savage said on TNT Sports: “I think Daniel Farke will look at that today and think it’s a great result. They are through to round five now, and things might start to open up.
“Leeds main aim, of course, is to remain in the Premier League, and they are not safe yet, but I think they could go on a run here and make the latter stages.
“To do that, they will have to play their strongest team. If they can get to safety quickly in the league and play their strongest team in this competition, then I think they have a chance.
“We have seen teams do that in recent years, and you need a bit of luck, of course, like they have had today, but there is no reason why they can’t go on a run deep into this competition.”
Leeds need a lot of luck
Leeds were not at their best today at St. Andrew’s, and Steve McManaman feels the better team lost today. However, they are in the hat for the fifth round draw.
The Whites have not made beyond the fifth round of the FA Cup since 2003, and for Savage’s prediction to come true, they need to play a lot better.
However, Leeds’ focus is on survival, and they are now six points clear of the relegation zone. However, West Ham’s form is a worry for all the teams just above the drop zone.
Farke will focus on ensuring that Leeds are in the Premier League next season over everything else. They will need the luck of the draw if they are to go on a deep cup run.
It is unlikely that relegation will be decided in the next few weeks, and expect another rotated team when Leeds take the field in the fifth round against any opposition.
