Leeds United suffered a dramatic EFL Cup exit on Wednesday night after letting a two-goal lead slip at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea producing a remarkable second-half comeback to run out 6-3 winners.
The Whites looked to be cruising towards the fourth round after taking a 2-0 advantage, but the game turned completely on its head following the interval. Chelsea found the net six times in a remarkable spell, leaving Leeds with no way back and ending their involvement in the competition.
It was also a difficult first appearance for Michael Zetterer. The German goalkeeper endured a nightmare debut and did little to suggest he will immediately challenge James Trafford for the starting spot.
There will be plenty for Daniel Farke to reflect on after such a collapse, particularly defensively. The Leeds boss, though, has plenty to say about the officiating, with his frustration towards the referee clear after the final whistle.

Farke blasts the referee’s penalty call
Chelsea found a way back into the game after Jarred Gillett blew his whistle for one of the softest of penalties that left Farke and his players furious.
Cole Palmer converted from the spot to star Chelsea’s turnaround, and the whole momentum of the game shifted.
Daniel Farke was left seething and insisted that there was no way Chelsea were in with a chance to score then if the referee had not given the penalty.
He stressed that none of the Chelsea players was appealing to the referee, and he just made a soft decision that completely changed the course of the game.
Farke said on Sky Sports: “It wasn’t even a chance for them, then the referee had the idea to give a penalty, so no one in the stadium was asking for it.
“None of their players was asking for it, but he spotted a situation where he thought he would give a penalty, and then they scored the goal.
“Then their players came into the game after half-time, and the whole stadium was relatively quiet for 60 minutes, and of course, all of the momentum was with them.”

Leeds fans need a response against Newcastle
Leeds United cannot afford to dwell on the 6-3 defeat to Chelsea for too long. It was a painful night, especially after taking a 2-0 lead, but the EFL Cup is now behind them. There is little point in carrying the frustration from Stamford Bridge into the next game.
Daniel Farke will have to make sure his players understand what went wrong, particularly the defensive mistakes and the way Leeds lost control after half-time. There are lessons to take from the defeat, but this is not the time for heads to drop. The response is far more important than the result itself.
Newcastle United now provide Leeds with a completely different challenge, and playing at Elland Road should give the players a lift. The atmosphere will be important, particularly after what happened in London. Leeds need to start quickly, play with confidence and remind everyone why they are so difficult to beat on home soil.
A strong performance and three points would be the perfect way to put the Chelsea disappointment to bed. Leeds have no time to feel sorry for themselves; they need to move on and respond.
