Leeds United fans will be very worried on Tuesday night after suffering another Premier League defeat. The Whites had already lost to Manchester City over the weekend, and now things look bleak.
Daniel Farke’s men should have gotten something from the game on Saturday, but failed to take their chances. And it was a similar story on Tuesday night; they played better than the visitors but failed to get a point. Leeds worked the opposition goalkeeper multiple times in the night but still failed to score. Sunderland’s only big chance came from the penalty spot after Ethan Ampadu was deemed to have deliberately handled the ball.
One goal was enough for Regis Le Bris’ side to take all three points away from Elland Road.
Regis Le Bris speaks after Leeds United result
The Sunderland boss reacted to the huge victory his side picked up on the road, speaking to TNT Sports.
“It was a tough game, it was tight, and it was a question of key moments, and we seized our opportunities, and it was an important win. Leeds played with their usual setup, so we had to adapt our structure to press them, and the lads did really well. I’m really impressed.”
Tonight was only the third league victory the Black Cats had achieved in this calendar year. They have been in really poor form lately, and only snapped their losing streak over the past weekend. Leeds United will be kicking themselves for not being able to get something out of this game.
The game was decided by referees
Le Bris says his team took advantage in key moments, but that was far from the truth. Sunderland barely threatened Leeds throughout the game, and the only reason they walked away with three points was because of the refereeing. Multiple incidents throughout the game where Leeds should have gotten the call. There was a penalty incident involving Pascal Struijk, which VAR ignored among other things. Sunderland were not good enough on the night, and the Whites should have easily dispatched them.
But sometimes in the Premier League, it is not about who was dominant, and it showed tonight. Leeds should have taken their chances despite the poor refereeing. Now, their job is going to be even harder in the upcoming games, looking at their fixture schedule.
