Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is facing the threat of one of his players forcing his way out of Elland Road in the January transfer window.

The Whites have made a solid start to the Premier League this season, scoring nine points from their first five league games and remaining unbeaten.

Leeds’ unbeaten start will come under pressure this weekend as they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on reigning champions Arsenal.

However, Fake has other worries as well, with internal trouble brewing behind the scenes as one player considers his future at Elland Road ahead of the winter window.

Leeds promotion hero set to force his way out of Elland Road

Dan James is one of the players who have had fewer minutes to play since Daniel Farke shifted to a back-three in November last year, and he is no longer starting as many games for the Whites.

The Welshman has struggled to get minutes at the start of the season, and serious speculation is now swirling about his future at Elland Road beyond the winter window.

Pete O’Rourke has told Football Insider that while Leeds aren’t keen to push him out the door, the decision may come down to what they want.

He believes James could force his way out of Elland Road in January if he prioritises playing more football in the second half of the season.

O’Rourke said: “I don’t think they’ll be keen to cash in on James as they’re going to need a big squad this season. Daniel Farke won’t want to weaken his squad.

“If the player wants regular first-team football, he might seek a move elsewhere, but I don’t think Leeds will necessarily be pushing him out the door.”

Can Leeds hold on to him?

The bigger question for Leeds United in January may not be whether they can keep Dan James, but whether Dan James will want to stay.

The Wales international has slipped down Daniel Farke’s pecking order this season, with his minutes limited as the manager has leaned on other attacking options. That is a difficult position for a player who has spent the last few years establishing himself as an important part of the Leeds squad.

James is 28 now and will want regular football, particularly with competition for places increasing at Elland Road.

His pace remains a major asset, and there is no doubt he can still make an impact, but sitting on the bench week after week is unlikely to be appealing.

Leeds may have no desire to sell him, but that could become irrelevant if James decides he needs a fresh challenge.

If his situation has not changed by January, the pressure will come from the player rather than the club.
