“No numbers on their shorts” – Lucas Perri makes incredible penalty shootout admission

Leeds United were taken to the limit by Championship side Birmingham City in the fourth round of the FA Cup, eventually needing a penalty shootout to book their place in the next stage.

Sean Longstaff converted the winning penalty, sealing progression for the Whites after a fiercely contested encounter in the Midlands today.

Under pressure in recent weeks, Lucas Perri rose to the occasion, producing a series of crucial saves during the game and in the shootout to prevent a shock at St Andrew’s.

The Leeds goalkeeper could have reignited his career with his performance today, and he is enjoying this moment after a difficult start to life in England this season.

Lucas Perri reveals his secrets after the penalty heroics

The Leeds goalkeeper conceded that it was hard to predict where the Birmingham City players were going to shoot, as their shorts had no numbers on them.

However, he trusts his instincts in the third penalty and reaped his reward by playing a huge part in helping Leeds to progress in the FA Cup today.

Perri said on TNT Sports: “Yes, we had done our prep on video, but for the first two penalties, because they had no numbers on their shorts, it was difficult to see.

“The third penalty, we did not know much or where he was going to shoot, so I went on instinct with this one. I am just happy to help the club.”

Leeds midfielder Sean Longstaff is happy to see Perri doing well and admitted that the squad are pleased for him as he has had a hard time since joining Leeds.

Longstaff added, “I thought Lucas was excellent today. Obviously, he was massive in the shootout, but he was massive throughout the whole game.

“In the first half, he was especially excellent and made two or three excellent saves. We have ground out a result; it is never pretty in the FA Cup.

“It’s been an up-and-down time for Lucas, but he deserves it today, and we are all really happy for him.”

Can Perri return to the team in the Premier League?

Perri has not played in the Premier League since Leeds’ 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United, where a late error allowed the home side to win.

Karl Darlow has not been flawless as well, but he has looked steadier between the sticks and has given more confidence to the defence.

The Brazilian would hope that his performance against Birmingham City would be the stepping stone for him to return to the team in the Premier League as well.

Leeds are likely to give him one more chance as they invested big in him last summer and would not want to discard him just yet.

They are looking at goalkeeping options for next summer, but Perri would hope to get a one more chance after his performance in the FA Cup.
