Leeds United will welcome a familiar face back to Elland Road next weekend when Tottenham Hotspur make the trip to Yorkshire. Archie Gray is expected to be part of the visitors’ starting eleven, setting up an emotional afternoon for a player who came through the club’s academy and remains hugely popular among the supporters.
Gray has continued to make progress since leaving his boyhood club, and Saturday evening brought another significant moment in his development. The midfielder found the net in Tottenham’s victory over Crystal Palace, scoring his first goal of the season, and giving himself another reason to look forward to the trip to Leeds.
However, his evening ended earlier than expected. Roberto De Zerbi withdrew him at half-time, prompting questions about whether the youngster had picked up an injury ahead of a crucial fixture.

De Zerbi explains why he substituted Gray

There was no injury concern, though. De Zerbi confirmed that Gray was taken off because he had already been booked, with the Tottenham manager unwilling to risk playing with ten men if the midfielder received a second yellow card.
Asked whether Gray had been injured, De Zerbi told reporters: “No, yellow card. Yellow card. And I didn’t want to take a risk for another yellow card.
“I’m sorry because he was playing very well. I explained why I took the decision, but I think it was the right decision in that moment.”
The Tottenham boss was clearly pleased with Gray’s contribution and had no concerns about his performance. In fact, he believes the 20-year-old is developing into a more mature player.
Asked whether Gray deserved his goal, De Zerbi added: “He’s improving a lot. I don’t know, after Manchester United, he’s playing very, very well, as a mature player.”
Those comments will be encouraging for Gray, who appears to be earning De Zerbi’s trust as he continues to establish himself in the Tottenham side.

Gray set for emotional Elland Road return

Attention will now turn to next weekend’s meeting with Leeds, where Gray is expected to feature against the club that helped shape his career.
His departure was a difficult one for Leeds supporters to accept. Having progressed through the academy and established himself in the first team at a young age, he was regarded as one of the brightest talents to emerge from Thorp Arch in recent years.
The reception should reflect that affection. Gray may be wearing Tottenham colours, but he remains a player many Leeds fans are proud to have watched develop.
There will be plenty riding on the contest for both clubs, but Gray’s return will add an extra layer of emotion to the occasion. De Zerbi’s latest comments suggest he is arriving at Elland Road in good form and with growing confidence.
