Daniel Farke faces tough decisions as the January transfer window opens. Leeds United need to strengthen their squad if they are serious about establishing themselves in the Premier League, and that means making room for players who can genuinely improve the team.
Sentiment cannot dictate recruitment. Football moves quickly, and the players who helped deliver promotion will not necessarily be the ones who take Leeds forward over the next few seasons.
One member of Farke’s squad has reached that crossroads. His contribution to Leeds’ recent success should not be forgotten, but his current standing in the team raises serious questions about whether keeping him around remains the right decision.

James’ role at Leeds has diminished

Daniel James has missed Leeds’ last three Premier League games through injury, but his absence has hardly changed the picture. Even when available, the Welshman has struggled to establish himself as more than a squad option.
James played his part in Leeds winning promotion and remains a popular figure among supporters. He also signed a new contract last year, underscoring the club’s belief that he could keep contributing. However, circumstances have changed, and Leeds need to be honest about what he can offer now.
His pace can still be useful, particularly when Farke wants to stretch opposition defences, but that alone is not enough. Leeds need more consistency and end product from their wide players, especially when they struggle to turn promising attacks into goals.
James has not done enough to make himself indispensable. With competition for places increasing and the club needing more quality in the final third, his place in the squad should be questioned.
There is no denying what he has done for Leeds, but past achievements cannot guarantee a place in the plans going forward. Farke must judge him on his current contribution rather than the memories of promotion.

Leeds must find a proper upgrade in January

Selling James in January would not be easy, given his history with the club and the contract he signed last year. But Leeds cannot afford to let sentiment stop them from improving the squad.
The January window offers an opportunity to bring in a winger who can make a more consistent impact, contribute goals and assists, and challenge for a regular starting place. If Leeds can find the right replacement, moving James on could make sense for everyone involved.
That does not mean the club should sell him simply for the sake of it. Farke must ensure a suitable upgrade is available and avoid leaving himself short of options in the second half of the season. But if a credible offer arrives and Leeds can reinvest the money wisely, they should seriously consider it.
The manager has to be ruthless if Leeds are to progress. Promotion heroes deserve recognition, but they cannot be immune from difficult decisions when the club is trying to move forward.
James has earned his place in Leeds’ recent history. Whether he has a place in their future is a different question, and January may be the right time for both sides to find an answer.
