Leeds United have made plenty of moves to strengthen their squad in recent transfer windows, but not every signing has received the same attention. Some deals happen quietly, leaving supporters to wonder what the club saw in a player and whether the decision fits a long-term plan.

One such arrival has now received an endorsement from the man who knows the player best. His agent has spoken about the move to Elland Road, offering an insight into why the transfer happened and expressing confidence that Leeds have secured a player with a bright future.

However, there is still a long way to go before that promise translates into first-team football.

Ngenge’s agent explains Leeds move

Leonard Ngenge joined Leeds United in January after impressing in a trial. The 19-year-old centre-back has a contract until June 2027, but his development at the club has largely stayed out of the spotlight.

Speaking to Africa Foot about the move, his agent Abiola Dauda said: “There are things I can’t say regarding Leonard’s move to Leeds, but what I can say is that he deserves it.

“Going on trial during the winter is no small feat. Leeds also believe in him, and I know he will become a top player.”

Dauda’s comments suggest Leeds saw enough during Ngenge’s trial to offer him a contract, and the agent clearly believes the defender can make a name for himself.

A winter trial isn’t always an easy route into a club, especially for a young player trying to impress in unfamiliar surroundings. Earning a deal at Leeds was an important step, but the next challenge is turning that opportunity into regular football and continued development.

Does Ngenge have a future at Elland Road?

There is reason to be cautious about predicting what comes next. Ngenge has yet to feature for Leeds’ Under-21s, making it hard to judge where he fits into the club’s development plans.

His contract runs until June 2027, so Leeds will eventually need to decide on his future. If he is to remain part of their long-term plans, regular involvement at youth level would provide a clearer indication of his progress and give the club a better opportunity to assess his readiness.

That lack of game time does not necessarily mean Leeds have lost faith in him. Behind-the-scenes factors may be at play, and his agent’s comments suggest genuine belief in his potential when the deal was agreed.

However, potential alone will not secure a future at Elland Road. Ngenge needs opportunities to develop, and Leeds need to see evidence that he can progress towards senior football.

With his contract entering its final stretch, the coming months could be important. Leeds may still see a future for the young defender, but until he starts featuring regularly, questions over his place in their plans will remain.
