Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale says Illan Meslier is the ‘best goalkeeper’ he has faced

Since Arsenal’s 4-1 win against an injury-ravaged Leeds team at Elland Road just before Christmas, the Gunners goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has certainly riled up the Whites fans.

The 23-year-old, who joined the North London outfit at the start of the season for £30 million, said he was ‘on the wind up’ during the recent match in West Yorkshire where he received an avalanche of abuse from the home team’s fans.

Speaking recently on Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster’s Fozcast YouTube series, Ramsdale said it wasn’t just verbal abuse aimed at him from the Leeds supporters claiming he pocketed £17 in coins that were thrown at him from the stands.

It wasn’t all negative from Ramsdale on Marcelo Bielsa’s team though when he was pitched a question by Foster later in the podcast asking him who has produced “the best goalie performance you have ever played against”…

And after a little deliberation from the Arsenal shot-stopper, Foster made the question slightly easier by adding “which goalie did you play against and think ‘Jesus Christ he was on fire today'”?

To which Ramsdale replied: “Off the top of my head, I would give it to Meslier, against Leeds. Could have been 6-0 after half time.”

In that recent clash at Elland Road where Leeds fielded a much-weakened team due to injuries, the Frenchman faced 12 shots on his goal in total with 11 of them coming in the first 45 minutes – which was a new Premier League record.

You can hear Ramsdale’s praise for Meslier by watching the full Fozcast episode below, with the Arsenal keeper speaking about the Leeds no.1 in the ‘quick fire’ section in the final six minutes of the video.

Leeds don’t meet Arsenal again until May 7 when the team’s will renew their rivalry at The Emirates, with Bielsa’s team hopeful of fielding a much stronger line-up than in the reverse fixture.
