Done deal: Leeds sign Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev

Leeds United have completed the signing of Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev, who joins the Whites on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Leeds’ interest in the Bulgarian international was revealed by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano yesterday, and the club have moved quickly in acquiring his signature before the end of the transfer window.

Signing Gruev significantly bolsters Whites manager Daniel Farke’s options in the middle of the pitch, with only Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray being the only players to occupy the defensive midfield role up to this point of the season.

And, amid reports that Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara is currently undergoing a medical with the West Yorkshire club, Leeds could very well be set for a double boost in midfield.

Gruev came through the Werder Bremen academy ranks after joining the Bundesliga outfit in 2015 and brings with him a significant amount of experience in the division, having made 62 appearances at senior level for the German side.

The 23-year-old also brings international experience having represented his country eight times so far in his career.

A Leeds statement confirming the signing read: “Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing of Ilia Gruev from Bundesliga side SV Werder Bremen, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

“The 23-year-old defensive midfielder joins the Whites in a permanent transfer, for an undisclosed fee.

“A Bulgarian international, Gruev has penned a four-year contract at Elland Road running until the summer of 2027.”

Gruev becomes the seventh signing in what has so far been a busy transfer window for Leeds, following Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Sam Byram, Joe Rodon, Joel Piroe and Djed Spence to Elland Road.
