Former Leeds star frustrated after “big opportunity missed” to beat Chelsea

Leeds United returned from the last international break on a high, beating West Ham to qualify for the FA Cup Semi-final. And that was the start of a positive run.

Faced with the danger of dropping to the relegation zone, the Whites were up against it. But Daniel Farke’s men managed to beat Manchester United and Wolves in successive games to go eight points clear of the bottom. Leeds then hit the 40-point mark midweek, with a draw away to Bournemouth. Sadly, they could not continue their great run this past weekend.

Former Leeds man frustrated after Chelsea defeat

They fell to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Everyone was anticpating an exciting match, but Blues’ interim boss Calum McFarlane and his team had other plans. A lone goal from Enzo Fernandez in the first half was enough to win the game.

The match was a big opportunity according to former Leeds man Brian Deane. He felt that Brenden Aaronson chance at the start of the game could have brought a different result if converted.

“It’s a real shame because it was a great opportunity, but I don’t think they asked enough questions of Chelsea, especially after the week they’ve had. It’s disappointing because I don’t think they put the back four under pressure, and that’s a problem, and it meant that Chelsea just grew in confidence. It’s a real shame (Aaronson didn’t score) because at that point it would have really set the game up to be good, but Chelsea dictated the tempo.”

”I felt at times when there were opportunities to look forward, we looked to the side, we looked back and again, you’re giving the impetus to Chelsea… There weren’t enough people in the box, and that’s a problem because when you’ve got one person to aim at, you’re chancing it really, it’s easy looking back, but it’s a real big opportunity missed.”

Whites can still end the season on a high

Simon Jordan said in his reaction to the result at Wembley that Leeds should be proud of their season. He even tagged it ”a season of successes” for Daniel Farke’s side. The FA cup is a tricky competition and no one knows when the Whites will replicate a run like that. But now the game is over, the fans need to look forward. Leeds are all but safe, and a result against Burnley will seal the deal. Fans already have another season of Premier League football to look forward to, and the team must make sure they end the season on a high.
