Leeds United’s goalless draw with Manchester United at Elland Road has unexpectedly become part of the debate surrounding Bruno Fernandes and the criticism facing the Red Devils captain.

Fernandes has come under fire after publicly challenging Michael Carrick, with questions raised about whether he was right to air his frustrations. However, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has offered a different perspective, suggesting the midfielder’s reaction may be about more than simply disrespecting his manager.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville played devil’s advocate and used Manchester United’s approach against Leeds to explain why Fernandes might have been frustrated with his role.

Neville points to strange Man Utd tactics against Leeds

Neville began by reminding viewers of Fernandes’ standing in the game before highlighting the tactical decisions made during the 0-0 draw at Elland Road.

“Let me play devil’s advocate.

“Bruno Fernandes is fantastic, PFA Player of the Year; you’d put him in the category of top midfield players in the world.

“They just went to Leeds, and they effectively played like the underdog.

“They sat behind the ball, played without a centre-forward and played Bruno and Tielemans in these strange positions.

“He may have sat there thinking, ‘What the hell am I doing here with Youri Tielemans in this sort of false centre-forward position’.”

Neville argued that a player of Fernandes’ ability might understandably question being deployed in an unfamiliar role, especially when Manchester United were set to play on the back foot against Leeds.

The former defender was not necessarily endorsing Fernandes’ decision to criticise Carrick publicly. Instead, he asked viewers to consider the circumstances that might have contributed to the midfielder’s frustration.

Leeds draw provides context to Fernandes debate

The 0-0 draw at Elland Road wasn’t a particularly memorable attacking performance for either side, but Manchester United’s cautious approach has now become relevant to the discussion around their captain.

Fernandes is expected to influence games, create chances and take responsibility in the final third. Neville’s point was that asking him to operate in unfamiliar positions while adopting such a conservative approach could limit what makes him effective.

For Leeds, the match offered another example of how opponents are prepared to approach Elland Road. For Manchester United, however, it has become part of a much bigger conversation about Fernandes, Carrick and the expectations placed on their captain.
