Leeds United supporters had plenty of reservations about one of the club’s signings last year, with fitness concerns threatening to overshadow what he could bring to Daniel Farke’s side.
Given his injury record, the scepticism was understandable. Leeds needed someone they could rely on to lead the line, and there were legitimate questions about whether the gamble would pay off over a full season.
But Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done enough to silence those doubts, earning praise from former Leeds forward Jermaine Beckford.

Beckford stunned by Calvert-Lewin’s resilience

Speaking on BBC’s The Football Hub, Beckford praised Calvert-Lewin and how he has answered questions about his fitness.
He stressed that everyone at Leeds are pleasantly shocked by the defender’s resilience and how he has rarely missed games since his arrival.
“You work your socks off first and foremost, you’re physical, and you get goals. He did that in abundance last season.
“Did really well, went above and beyond and shocked everybody at how resilient his body is.
“There were lots of questions asked about whether his body is going to break down or how long he’s going to last and how many games he’ll play. He played pretty much every single game last season.”
“Leeds United number nine? It’s a heavy shirt to wear, I promise you.” ⚽️

Leeds have found a reliable focal point

When Leeds signed Calvert-Lewin last year, supporters made his injury history a major talking point. There was little doubt about his ability when fit, but whether he could stay available consistently was another matter.
He has since become a key figure in Leeds’ attack, offering the physical presence, work rate and goals the side needs from their leading striker. Just as importantly, he has been available far more regularly than some fans feared.
Beckford’s comments underline how dramatically the perception of Calvert-Lewin has changed. What initially looked like a risky signing has proven valuable, with Leeds benefiting from a striker who can lead the line and provide a reliable attacking reference point.
For a club looking to keep progressing in the Premier League, having a dependable centre-forward is crucial. Calvert-Lewin has given Leeds just that, and his response to the doubts surrounding him deserves credit.
