Leeds United were left devastated at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night as their EFL Cup campaign came to an end with a 6-3 defeat against Chelsea.

The Whites were dreaming of a first win at Stamford Bridge in 27 years when Brenden Aaronson put them 2-0 ahead in the 48th minute. However, Chelsea scored three goals in the next 17 minutes and cruised to a 6-3 win at the end.

Leeds goalkeeper Michael Zetterer produced a shocking performance in his first appearance for the club and is unlikely to get another chance until the start of 2027.

Daniel Farke would be disappointed at the way his team defended in the second half to concede six goals, and at the performance of his number 2 goalkeeper, who he signed at the end of the last transfer window on a three-year deal.

Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink makes Daniel Farke point after Chelsea result

Daniel Farke revealed his unhappiness with referee Jarred Gillette after he awarded a soft penalty to Chelsea, which set the stage for their second-half comeback.

However, the Leeds boss also said a lot without saying anything at all when he refused to answer questions about his potential new contract at Elland Road.

Former Leeds striker Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink has claimed the German deserves a new deal after the work he has done at Elland Road.

He said on Sky Sports: “If I am Leeds, I would continue with him.

“There’s still progress; he deserves a new contract.”

Former Premier League centre-back Connor Coady agreed with the ex-striker and feels it’s vital for Leeds that they continue with Farke in the coming years.

He said: “It’s huge, huge. He’s not going to give anything away until something’s sorted, and I understand his answer in that moment, but it’s huge for Leeds because of the job he’s done.

“We spoke before the game about how he’s built into Leeds, how he changed what he wanted to do last year when it came to playing the Man City game and going to a back 5; he’s done all that himself.

“Where he’s built the club up to now is fully down to him, so it’s important they tie him down and help him build the squad.

“Tonight Leeds weren’t poor; they played a really good part in this game, by the way. Leeds weren’t poor in any stretch.”

Leeds cannot afford to let this situation linger

The Whites are expected to hold talks with Farke over the international break, and an agreement in principle is in place between the two sides.

But there appears to be no rush on either side to finalise the terms of the deal and ensure Farke is on a new three-year contract as soon as possible.

It works for the German coach as he can leverage his position if Leeds continue to do well in the Premier League and get a better deal amid interest from other clubs.

The plan makes no sense for the 49ers, who should be doing everything to ensure that the manager signs on the dotted line soon.

Clubs with bigger budgets are looking at Farke’s work at Leeds, and the longer he goes without signing a contract, the more a potential departure becomes a real possibility.

Farkes picked another disaster of a goal keeper there
You shouldn’t be lowed to bring virtually a new team on

Shocking result. Don’t want to see Zetterer, James or Longstaff again any time soon. Hugely embarrassing to lose so badly after being so dominant. Farke could’ve reacted a bit quicker too.
