Leeds back in Cunha race – David Ornstein reports

According to David Ornstein, Leeds have “serious” interest in signing Matheus Cunha in January.

The forward has been linked with multiple clubs since he expressed his desire to leave Spain for more game time. Reports claim Cunha’s lack of first team minutes led to him being dropped from the Brazil squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Cunha will push for a move this January window, and Leeds are said to be pushing to sign him too. Ornstein reports that missing out on Cody Gakpo has pushed Leeds to get the deal done quickly:

“There is serious interest, too, from Leeds United,” he wrote.

“They tried to get Cunha before he went to Atletico from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2021 and he knows their head coach Jesse Marsch from their time together at another German club, RB Leipzig, in 2018-19.”

“Having narrowly missed out on Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands in the summer, Leeds know how important it is to pounce before players they want in the market become out of reach for them.”

The potential addition of Cunha would relieve the pressure on Rodrigo, with Bamford ruled out till the New Year. The Brazilian is a hard worker, gifted with pace and has played under Jesse Marsch at Liepzig. Leeds need to get this deal over the line as soon as possible.
