Leeds United’s cushion over the bottom three, specifically, Tottenham Hotspur, has been cut to six points after the latest round of results in the Premier League survival battle.
Daniel Farke’s side looked to have virtually secured safety when they reached the 40-point mark with a draw against Bournemouth on Wednesday night.
But wins for Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Tottenham this weekend have kept things interesting, with four games still to play this season.
Leeds will travel to north London to take on Tottenham next month in a Premier League game that could decide the fate of the home side. However, Spurs have suffered another major injury.
Tottenham suffer a major blow ahead of the big game against Leeds next month
Tottenham ended their winless run in 2026 with a 1-0 victory over Wolves away from home on Saturday. However, their injury problems were exacerbated at Molineux.
Attacking midfielder Xavi Simons suffered a knee injury, and there are serious doubts about whether he will play again this season.
Brighton boss Robert De Zerbi didn’t provide any details on the extent of the injury or how long the Dutchman will be out due to problem he suffered on Saturday.
“For Xavi, it is a problem of his knee”, De Zerbi said in his post-match press conference.
“We go to see in the next days, Monday or Tuesday. For Solanke, it is not a big problem. I don’t know how many games we lose him, but I would like to know the situation with Xavi because the knee is always different than the muscular injury.
“He felt pain. I spoke to him two, three minutes ago. He feels better than the beginning of the injury.”
Spurs need him on the pitch, given the big games coming up, especially against Leeds at home next month.
The Whites may be safe by then
The wins for West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham meant Leeds are not as safe as they thought they would be when they hit the 40-point mark last week.
Daniel Farke’s team may need one more win to ensure that they do not get sucked into the relegation zone by the end of the season.
A win away at Tottenham next month could secure Premier League safety and more or less guarantee that Spurs would go down at the end of the campaign.
However, if Leeds beat Burnely at Elland Road next Friday night, they may be secure by the time they travel to Tottenham.
