Leeds told to prepare for potential talismanic superstar exit: “They need to be realistic”

Leeds United are entering an important period in their Premier League journey. Having returned to the top flight last year, their immediate priority is to establish themselves, build a competitive squad, and avoid another relegation battle.

Daniel Farke has backing from the club’s ownership, while excitement grows about the young talent available to him. But holding on to those players could become increasingly difficult as bigger clubs take notice.

Leeds have no shortage of reasons to be optimistic about their future, yet the prospect of losing one of their most important young players reminds them of the challenge ahead. And a former Premier League executive believes the Whites need to approach that situation with a clear understanding of where they stand.

Wyness issues warning over Muhamerovic’s future

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has discussed the possibility of Tarik Muhamerovic leaving Leeds, with Barcelona, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool reportedly among the clubs interested in the defender.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness admitted there is genuine concern that Leeds could lose the highly rated defender, but insisted the club must prioritise consolidating their Premier League position rather than thinking about a potential payday.

“There is that concern about losing him. Leeds have got to be realistic, and I think the target is still: let’s not get in a relegation battle, let’s stay mid-table, let’s consolidate and then move forward”, he said.

Wyness believes Leeds should resist the temptation to cash in on their emerging talent while they are still establishing themselves in the top flight.

“The club’s in that interesting phase.

They’ve got to hang on to all that young talent they’ve got right now; forget about cashing in because they’ve got to consolidate that position in the Premier League, and they’ve got to do whatever it takes to get there.”

Leeds urged to keep their young talent

Wyness also pointed to the backing Farke has received and suggested there is little reason for Leeds to make a major decision that could undermine the progress they are making.

“You know, they’re backing Farke. The squad’s doing okay. Leeds are doing fine. And I just don’t think there’s any need to do anything silly.”

His message was clear: Leeds should keep Muhamerovic for as long as possible rather than treat him as an asset to sell at the first opportunity.

“So if I were them, and I’m sure they will, they’ll want to keep him because there’ll be plenty more years to think about a move and cashing in.

“But right now, consolidate and keep everything going the right way.”

Interest from Europe’s biggest clubs reflects Muhamerovic’s growing reputation, but it also presents Leeds with a difficult challenge. They cannot expect to compete financially with Barcelona, Bayern or Liverpool overnight.

However, selling a key young player now would risk weakening a squad that still needs to grow. If Leeds are serious about building something sustainable under Farke, keeping their best talent may matter as much as the players they bring in.
