Daniel Farke has run out of reasons to overlook £15m Leeds star

Leeds United have a difficult week ahead after Saturday’s disappointing defeat at Bournemouth, with Daniel Farke needing to find a way to get more out of his squad before Tottenham visit Elland Road.

The Whites have struggled to create enough clear-cut chances in recent weeks, and their attacking problems were once again exposed on the south coast. Farke made several second-half changes to turn things around, but Leeds lacked the quality to find an equaliser before conceding a second in stoppage time.

However, the bench offered some encouraging individual contributions. One player in particular has now made a strong case for a more prominent role, having spent much of the campaign waiting for an opportunity to reclaim his place.

Longstaff making it difficult for Farke to ignore him

Sean Longstaff has not had an easy time since joining Leeds for £15m last year. He was an important player before injury disrupted his first season, and he has struggled to force his way back into the starting XI since returning.

But his recent substitute appearances have given Farke plenty to think about. Longstaff was excellent when introduced against Sunderland, coming close to producing a match-winning contribution. He was lively again at Bournemouth, bringing energy and forward movement to a midfield that had struggled to impose itself.

The Yorkshire Evening Post gave him a 7/10 for his performance, praising the impact he made from the bench. Lee Sobot noted that Longstaff “looked to make things happen”, highlighting his neat passing and willingness to shoot.

That assessment reflects what Leeds have been missing. Longstaff does not simply recycle possession; he looks to move the team forward, make late runs and create problems around the opposition penalty area.

There was a blemish, though. He was partly responsible for Bournemouth’s second goal after giving the ball away in a dangerous area, allowing the hosts to launch the attack that ended with Amine Adli scoring.

Farke should give him a starting opportunity

That mistake should not erase the positive aspects of Longstaff’s contribution. Leeds were chasing the game and needed someone to inject urgency into their play. He offered considerably more drive than some of the players who started.

Farke now has a decision to make ahead of Tottenham’s visit. Longstaff has been patient since recovering from injury, but his recent cameos suggest he is ready for more responsibility.

Leeds need midfielders who can carry the ball forward and threaten beyond simply keeping possession. Longstaff has shown he can provide both.

With the Tottenham game approaching, Farke has little reason to keep overlooking him. A starting place would be a deserved reward for the £15m signing, and potentially exactly what Leeds need to bring some life back into their midfield.
