Leeds United: Does ‘new Wayne Rooney’ deserve a chance?

When Leeds United signed young forward, Joe Geldhart from Wigan Athletic, many likened him to Wayne Rooney, and rightfully so.

Geldhart’s stocky frame and dogged determination drew comparisons to the ex-England captain, unfortunately for Leeds, the move hasn’t quite worked out.

Having only made 11 appearances for the Whites, scoring just once, he’s yet to make his mark after a decent start to his Leeds United career

He’s still only 21-years-old and with heaps of potential. Leeds have been lacking a proper number nine for the past few years, perhaps it’s time to give the youngster a second chance despite not playing since February.

Time for something new

Leeds’ disappointing run over the last few games has highlighted just how badly they’re missing a goalscorer. Not only have they lost twice and drawn once in their last three games, Leeds have only scored one goal.

Patrick Bamford hasn’t been up to it this season, Joel Piroe has mostly played as a shadow striker, and even though he’s massively improved, Georgino Rutter isn’t a natural number nine.

With chances of automatic promotion now in the balance, what Daniel Farke now needs is an unknown quantity. Geldhart could be just that.

There are few things Leeds fans love more than a player who’s going to take a game by the scruff of the neck, Geldhart would do exactly that.

He’s unpredictable and willing to get his hands dirty, if given the opportunity, he could make a serious impact.

Age is on his side

Geldhart joined the club at 18, he’s now just 21-years-old. What players need at that age is consistent game-time, that’s not something Leeds United were able to give him while they were fighting for their lives in the Premier League.

Still, we’ve seen glimpses of what he’s capable of. His goal in Leeds United’s 3-2 win over Chelsea in December 2021 gave fans one of the best moments in a great season.

He’s still young and undoubtedly has the ability to become a serious player.
