Leeds United could be dealt a major financial blow after recent reports have emerged regarding one of their players.

Following their promotion to the Premier League, Leeds sent multiple players out on loan, with the hope that they’d either go on to join those clubs permanently or return to Elland Road having maintained or increased their transfer value ahead of a permanent move away.

Largie Ramazani is a good example of this, with the Belgian winger’s recent form for Valencia strengthening United’s bargaining power as we head towards the summer transfer window.

However, one Leeds United loanee has reportedly suffered a major injury, which could potentially derail any plans the 49ers had this summer of cashing in on him.

Mateo Joseph forced out of training with “very worrying” injury

Joseph, 22, joined La Liga side Mallorca on loan in the summer after it became apparent that the Spaniard would not get the gametime he would be looking for under Daniel Farke in the top flight.

The youngster has struggled since his move to La Liga, notching just two goals in 29 league appearances.

However, according to reports from Estadio Deportivo, Joseph may not get the opportunity to add to this tally before the end of the season, with Mallorca fearing that the forward may have suffered a serious knee injury.

At this stage, the fear is that Joseph could miss the remainder of the season, with it being considered that Joseph returns to West Yorkshire for Leeds to supervise his recovery.

If Joseph has suffered a long-term knee injury, then this will certainly affect Leeds’ ability to sell the out-of-favour striker in the summer, with clubs potentially being hesitant to part ways with a transfer fee to secure his services, meaning Leeds could potentially miss out on millions in what would be a major financial blow.

Mateo Joseph’s data this season has been concerning

During United’s title-winning campaign, Joseph struggled to find the back of the net when he played, scoring three times in 39 Championship appearances.

Within that season, Joseph amassed an xG of 5.10 and also missed six big chances.

Unfortunately for Leeds, that concerning trend has continued, with Joseph being even more wasteful in front of goal for Mallorca this season.

  • Joseph has only scored two goals in La Liga this season from an xG of 5.09
  • On top of this, the forward has missed eight big chances
  • Joseph averages a league goal every 855 minutes this season (Sofascore)

If Joseph’s injury is, in fact, a season-ending one, then Leeds may have to loan the youngster out again after he regains his fitness over the summer, in the hopes he can impress enough to find a permanent buyer.
