Leeds United settled for a point against Sunderland, but one summer signing ensured Daniel Farke’s side left the Stadium of Light with something to show for it.
The goalless draw was hardly a classic, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in difficult conditions. However, Leeds‘ goalkeeper earned praise for keeping Sunderland at bay.
James Trafford produced a series of important saves to preserve his clean sheet, including one particularly impressive stop that caught the attention of former Premier League defenders Toby Alderweireld and Ashley Williams.

Toby Alderweireld hails Trafford’s incredible saves

Alderweireld was particularly impressed by Trafford’s reaction to a dangerous Sunderland effort, highlighting both the quality of the attempt and the goalkeeper’s response.
He said on BBC’s Match of the Day: “It was a good touch; the ball was deflected, and Trafford made a good save.
“He did a wonderful body movement, and Trafford made an unbelievable save.
“Very, very good save.
“Trafford was the man of the match.”
The former Tottenham defender’s verdict underlined just how important Trafford was to Leeds. While the visitors struggled to create enough going forward, their summer signing delivered when his team needed him most.

Williams believes Sunderland would have won without Trafford

Williams was equally impressed by the goalkeeper’s display and suggested his contribution proved decisive in the outcome.
“Really impressed with him today.
“Probably Sunderland would have won if not for Trafford’s goalkeeping.”
That is a significant endorsement of Trafford’s performance. Leeds may be frustrated at failing to turn another draw into a victory, but they can take encouragement from the impact their record signing is already having.
The club invested heavily in Trafford this summer, and performances like this show why they were prepared to make that commitment. He cannot solve Leeds’ problems in the final third, but he can keep them in games when the team is struggling.
Against Sunderland, that proved invaluable. Now Leeds need to ensure their goalkeeper’s heroics earn more than another point.
