Leeds United have made some significant investments since returning to the Premier League last year, but one of their biggest decisions is already attracting attention from a former Manchester United captain.

The Elland Road club broke their transfer record last summer by signing a player they believe can become a key figure for years to come. The move has worked out well so far, with the newcomer quickly establishing himself and earning praise for his performances.

However, Roy Keane believes another Premier League club may have been too quick to let him go. Speaking on The Overlap, the former midfielder questioned the decision and suggested a little more patience could have made all the difference.

Keane questions Man City decision to sell Trafford

Keane discussed Manchester City’s goalkeeping options, arguing that Enzo Maresca’s side should have kept hold of James Trafford rather than letting him move to Leeds.

“They should have stayed with the young lad – Trafford.

“He would have made a few mistakes, but patience.

“Everyone is in a hurry, pal!”

Keane’s argument was straightforward: young goalkeepers need time to develop, and clubs cannot expect them to get everything right immediately.

Trafford had been at City before returning in 2025, but he eventually moved on after struggling to secure a regular place. Leeds moved last summer, paying a club-record £45m to bring him to Elland Road.

Keane clearly feels City could have shown greater faith in a goalkeeper who still had plenty of potential to fulfil.

Trafford already justifying Leeds’ record investment

Leeds will have few complaints about how the transfer has worked out so far. Trafford has produced several excellent performances and looks increasingly comfortable as Farke’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His display in the goalless draw against Sunderland was particularly impressive. He made several exceptional saves to keep Leeds in the game and earned widespread praise for his contribution. Without him, Farke’s side could easily have left the Stadium of Light without a point.

The manager has been equally impressed, going so far as to describe Trafford as the most talented English goalkeeper of his generation.

That is a huge endorsement, but Farke’s claim is backed by strong performances so far. Leeds invested £45m in a goalkeeper they believe can be central to their future, and the early signs are encouraging.

Keane thinks City should have been more patient. Leeds, meanwhile, are already reaping the rewards of signing Trafford.
