Leeds United look in pristine form at the start of the season and sit fourth in the Premier League table after the opening four league games.

Leeds’ 4-1 win over Newcastle at Elland Road on Monday night was a major statement, and they are looking to build on last season’s 14th-place finish.

Daniel Farke has tried to temper expectations at this stage, but Leeds are being backed to qualify for European football at the end of the campaign.

Several Leeds players are in brilliant form at the start of the season, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin looked like he was getting into his groove against Newcastle.

Sky Sports pundit endorses Domnic Calvert-Lewin for England

Calvert-Lewin scored one and should have had another on Monday night, bullying the Leeds defence into surrender with a physical, incisive performance.

However, many pundits were keen to pump the brakes on Calvert-Lewin returning to the England squad ahead of this week’s Three Lions selection.

But Kevin Davies has insisted that there is no reason for Thomas Tuchel to ignore the Leeds striker for the upcoming international games.

He stressed that few English strikers are playing as well as Calvert-Lewin, and he deserves to be Harry Kane’s backup.

When asked who should be Harry Kane’s backup in the England squad, Davies said on Sky Sports: “I think on form, he has to be up there, doesn’t he?

“You always pick players on form; you have to. Toney and Watkins have gone to Saudi. They didn’t really impress at the World Cup.

“I think you really have to look at him as a backup; give him the opportunity and go and have a look at him.

“There aren’t many other English players who are doing what he is doing.”

Tuchel is running out of excuses for not selecting Calvert-Lewin

Thomas Tuchel was happy to drop Calvert-Lewin after one cameo before the World Cup and inexplicably carried Ivan Toney into the tournament.

The England manager said before the World Cup that a squad need more than just the 26 best players, and here lies the problem for Calvert-Lewin.

His form is good enough to earn him a recall, but the manager’s personal preferences and how he wants his teams to play play a significant role.

Even after a good start to the season, Calvert-Lewin may not be in the scheme of things when Tuchela announces the England squad this week.
