Former Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier was officially unveiled as an Arsenal player earlier this month, bringing the curtain down on his seven-year spell at Elland Road.
The Frenchman left the club after Leeds decided not to offer him a new contract, ending a relationship that had looked destined to conclude this summer.
Meslier’s future had been in doubt ever since he lost his place during Leeds’ Championship promotion run last season. A series of costly errors prompted Daniel Farke to turn to Karl Darlow, who remained in goal as the Whites went on to win the league on the final day.
From that point on, Meslier slipped down the pecking order and was no longer part of Farke’s plans. The Leeds boss even admitted towards the end of last season that the Frenchman had become the club’s third-choice goalkeeper.
Arsenal fans left stunned by Illan Meslier
Arsenal’s decision to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer this summer surprised many. Meslier’s decision also shocked many as they felt that he would prioritise playing more football after the way things ended at Leeds.
He won’t be the first choice at Arsenal next season as David Raya is the undisputed number one. However, Arsenal fans have been left pleased with what they saw from him in pre-season.
Meslier played the last 29 minutes of Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Girona on Saturday, and the Gunners fans were stunned.
Arsenal fans were happy to see his reflexes and composure with the ball on his debut.

Came on at 61’ and played the final 29 minutes, keeping a clean sheet.
Made a couple of important reflex saves (including a sharp one to deny Ruiz from close range) and looked confident.

One supporter even cheekily remarked if Raya’s place in the team is safe after what they saw from Meslier.

Another Arsenal fan remarked that the Gunners could get the best out of the Frenchman because of the more stable environment he is in compared to Leeds.
Don’t underestimate how an environment can make someone a winner or a loser.
Illan Meslier was shitted his whole window.
The saves he made today are crazy.
I won’t be surprised when he becomes a solid number 2 behind Raya for years.

A tale of unfulfilled potential at Leeds
Illan Meslier leaves Leeds United as the club’s record holder for the most clean sheets in a single season and as a goalkeeper who played a pivotal role in two promotion-winning campaigns under Marcelo Bielsa and Daniel Farke.
He also enjoyed an outstanding first season in the Premier League under Bielsa, establishing himself as one of Leeds’ most important players despite his age and earning widespread praise for his performances.
However, Meslier never quite fulfilled the enormous potential many believed he possessed. His place in the side came under growing scrutiny over the past two seasons, and a string of mistakes during the closing stages of last season eventually cost him the number one shirt, which he was unable to win back.
Leeds explored the possibility of selling the Frenchman in each of the last two transfer windows, but no deal materialised. That has led to his departure on a free transfer, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year spell at Elland Road.
Although his Leeds career finished on a disappointing note, Meslier’s contribution to some of the club’s biggest achievements in recent years should not be forgotten.
