The Leeds United Under-21s felt mixed emotions at Victoria Park on Tuesday evening.
Summer addition Ditmir Hodja netted his first goal in the Whites’ colours, but it wasn’t enough to stop a 3-1 defeat to senior side Hartlepool United.
The loss officially draws the curtain on Leeds’ National League Cup campaign at the group stage, marking their third defeat in four outings against first-team opposition.

Early Stumbles Leave Leeds Facing Upward Battle

Scott Gardner’s young side paid the price for a sluggish start on the North East coast. Early defensive lapses handed the initiative to the hosts, with Hartlepool taking full control within the opening half-hour.
Terry Bondo broke the deadlock from the penalty spot before Chris Popov doubled the advantage in the 28th minute, leaving the visitors facing a steep mountain to climb.
Despite the early double blow, Leeds showed plenty of spirit either side of the interval. Gardner’s side mounted several promising attacks as they pushed to get back into the contest.
However, Hartlepool hit back with a decisive third on the 70-minute mark when Bondo slotted home his second of the evening, effectively putting the tie out of reach.
Bright Spark from the Bench Offers Silver Lining

The brightest moment of the night for the away side arrived shortly after that third goal. Gardner introduced Hodja off the bench, and the North Macedonian youth international made an immediate impression on the pitch.
The highly rated attacker, who joined Leeds on a three-year contract from FK Rabotnicki in August, reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and lashed home his debut goal. The finish highlighted the sharp instincts that made him such an intriguing summer pick-up for the club’s academy setup.
While Hodja’s strike provided a late moment of quality and a personal milestone for the teenager, it ultimately proved to be a mere consolation.
Leeds couldn’t turn the momentum into a late comeback, ending their maiden run in the competition. Attention for Gardner’s squad now turns back to Premier League 2 action, with Hodja’s quick impact offering a clear positive to build on.
