Leeds United moved nine points clear of the relegation zone on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Elland Road to more or less secure Premier League survival.
However, Saturday’s Premier League results promised more twists and turns in the relegation dogfight after West Ham lost 3-0 against Brentford at the GTech Stadium.
With Tottenham and Nottingham Forest yet to play this weekend, more drama is expected at the bottom end of the table before this round of Premier League fixtures.
Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney were on the Match of the Day on Saturday night, and the former England and Manchester United captain is worried for one of the teams.
Wayne Rooney reveals his relegation fears
The former striker was insistent last week that Tottenham are on their way out of the Premier League this season. But after Saturday, he is no longer sure.
He has stressed that West Ham’s defending at Brentford was concerning, and while he expects Nottingham Forest to be safe, Rooney is really worried for the Hammers after what he saw on Saturday.
Rooney said on Match of the Day: “Last week I said Spurs, but this week, after watching West Ham’s defending, I am very worried for them.
“They have all got tough games.
“I think Forest have got enough points, but I am worried for West Ham.”
He has no such worries for Leeds United
Leeds are now on 43 points and no side have suffered relegation in a 38-game Premier League season after scoring that amount of points.
Daniel Farke’s men are not mathematically out of it yet, but Rooney is insistent that the Whites can now afford to celebrate staying in the Premier League.
He later added: “I think they will [stay in the Premier League].”
Leeds will still have a major role in deciding who finishes 18th in the Premier League this season, as they will face Tottenham a week from Monday and will travel to West Ham on the final day of the campaign.
How charged up Daniel Farke’s side will be after securing survival could end up deciding the fate of the two London clubs at the end of the 2025/26 season.
