Karl Darlow’s move to Manchester United on a free transfer has been confirmed after he left Leeds at the end of his contract last month.

Leeds offered him a new two-year deal to stay. However, he opted to take up the offer from Manchester United to move to Old Trafford this summer.

He ended last season as Leeds’ number one goalkeeper. However, the Whites could not convince him to stick around and sign a new deal with the club.

The Welshman will get an opportunity to play Champions League football next season, but he will remain the number 2 to Senne Lammens at Old Trafford.

Karl Darlow’s first words since leaving Leeds United

Darlow says he is proud to have completed his move to Manchester United and is excited by the prospect of competing with the club’s existing goalkeepers.

He believes the move represents a special opportunity to play for one of the world’s biggest clubs at this stage of his career.

He told the club’sofficial website: “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United.

“I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers, and I’m really looking forward to all of us pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.

“This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”

Leeds would have loved to keep Darlow, as they are now in the market for two goalkeepers, with Lucas Perri expected to leave for Torino in the transfer window.

Daniel Farke played a big role in the goalkeeper’s exit

The Leeds manager was counting on keeping Darlow and was expecting him to sign a new two-year contract to extend his stay at Elland Road.

However, Daniel Farke ended up playing a major role in the Welshman’s departure from the club.

The German refused to provide Darlow with assurances that he would be the number one goalkeeper at Leeds next season despite his performances.

Darlow eventually decided that if he were to be a number 2 goalkeeper, he would rather be at Manchester United than Leeds next season.

It has now left Leeds to fill a big hole in their squad amid a mini goalkeeping crisis. They cannot afford to lose Perri without signing at least two goalkeepers.
