Scott Parker could hardly have asked for a more dramatic start to life at West Ham, with his first game in charge producing a remarkable comeback against Cardiff City on Wednesday night.

The Hammers looked completely out of the contest after falling three goals behind, but a second-half fightback rescued a point and offered Parker plenty to think about as he begins his new job.

Leeds United also had an encouraging development, with one of their players making his presence felt after the new manager gave him an opportunity.

Leeds loanee plays his part in West Ham comeback

Parker turned to Joel Piroe at half-time, with West Ham trailing 3-0 and needing something to change. The Leeds loanee responded with an important contribution as the visitors began their recovery.

In the 65th minute, Piroe flicked on Jarrod Bowen’s pass for Arne Engels to score West Ham’s second goal. It gave the Hammers renewed belief and set up a tense finish.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Max Kilman found the net eight minutes from time to complete an extraordinary comeback and secure a 3-3 draw.

Piroe did not need long to make an impression on Parker. Coming on at the break in such difficult circumstances, he helped provide the attacking spark West Ham needed to get back into the contest.

It was an encouraging first outing under the new manager, particularly for a player looking to establish himself as a regular for the rest of the campaign.

West Ham’s promotion push could benefit Leeds

Leeds will also be keeping a close eye on Piroe’s performances for another reason.

The loan agreement reportedly includes an obligation for West Ham to sign the forward permanently for around ÂŁ8m if they win promotion. That would provide Leeds with a useful financial return, but the Hammers still have plenty of work to do.

They are currently eighth in the Championship, occupying the final play-off position. Promotion remains a realistic possibility, but Wednesday’s result doesn’t change the fact that there is a long road ahead.

For Piroe, the immediate priority will be convincing Parker that he deserves a regular place in the side. His contribution against Cardiff was a positive start, and if he can build on it, Leeds could ultimately benefit both on and off the pitch.
